What sort of clothing should I wear and do I need any specialist equipment?
Safety and comfort are most important if you're to enjoy your riding experience. You should wear footwear with a small heel and a through sole and you must wear a riding hat. Gloves are also recommended. You should wear clothing that you find comfortable, with long hair tied back, jackets fastened and no jewellery. We do appreciate that you may not wish to invest in specialist equipment for your first few lessons and we have riding hats and some boots that are available for you to use. We are not however specialist riding hat fitters and we do strongly suggest that you purchase your own. Please note soft soled footwear and trainers are unsuitable.
Do I have to commit to a course of lessons?
You don't have to commit to a specific number of riding lessons, it's entirely up to you how often you choose to come, but to ensure you make progress in your riding it's best to come on a regular basis if you can.
Is it better to have a private or a class lesson?
This is all down to personal preference and depends on what you want to achieve from your riding. We endeavour to have small group, rather than large group lessons as this way we ensure all our clients have maximum support from their instructor. Private lessons can be arranged if you want a more personalised riding experience or if you want to gain some experience before joining a class lesson.
I'm an experienced rider and would like to be able to just come for a ride?
Experienced riders, subject to an initial riding assessment, can hire our horses/ponies and make use of our facilities. Please note our horses/ponies must stay on the Becconsall Equestrian Centre premises, riding hats must be worn at all times when riding and safety rules must be followed.
I'm thinking about buying a horse/pony but I'm not sure how big a commitment it would be?
Our horse/ponies are sometimes available for part-loan for a period of time and the experience can give you a real insight into what it would be like to own your own horse/pony.
I enjoy horse riding but I don't know much about how to look after horses?
We can provide lectures/workshops on horse care and management to give you both the theory and the practical side.
I'm thinking of buying my own horse/pony, can you help me?
With extensive experience gained over 40 years we can help you find a horse/pony that's right for you. We also occasionally have horses/ponies for sale, including top class home-bred show horses. Once you've found your perfect equine partner we can help and advise you on horse care and management and provide riding instruction and coaching to help you both achieve your potential.
I'd like to come horse riding but I haven't ridden for years, will this be a problem?
We will happily re-introduce you to riding, taking it at a pace to suit you.
I love horses and want to ride, but I'm really nervous, what can you do to help me?
Our instructors (and horses) are patient and understanding and will work with you to overcome any barriers and fears, taking it at your pace and ensuring you gain confidence every step of the way.
I'm coming on holiday to Southport and would like to go horse riding?
Let us know what your plans are and we'll put together a programme of riding to enhance your stay, whether you choose to visit us just once or several times, we'd be delighted to be a part of your holiday.
I'm looking for something different to celebrate a birthday, can you help?
We offer pony parties that include pony grooming, a riding lesson and games, both riders and non riders are welcome. We can also offer gift vouchers and private birthday lessons. Call us to discuss your requirements and we'll do our best to make sure it's a special occasion.
